On September 4, 2026, the news hit that Republicans had been fooled by a fake site called GOPDallas2026.com. The New York Times broke the story of the details and identified who was behind it. It was a guy named Yosi Sargent. You might recall his name from when Glenn Beck called him out in 2009 for his propaganda work with the NRA.

It seems that Sargent never went away. The New York Times article portrays him as some kind of prankster who managed to troll Republicans and conservatives through his brilliant work.

In this piece, I’ll explain exactly how “brilliant” his work really was, and why Google aided and abetted him in committing fraud and election interference. Here’s the timeline.

1) The RNC published gopconvention.com in June 2026.

It attracted more than 10,000 backlinks from over 700 referring domains. Before 2017, that would be considered enough to rank this new domain #1 for its target phrase.

2) Sargent purchased the gopdallas2026.com domain in July 2026 and published a website on it.

This is what it looked like:

I’ll give him points for being clever. It’s an entirely AI-generated Web site that is made to look exactly like the RNC’s official Web site, down to an optimized Title tag that reads “RNC Midterm Convention”, matching the GOP’s site. Note that the site lacks a Privacy Policy and a T&C, and likely ended up phishing hundreds of email addresses. I hope the @FTC takes a good look at that.

Was Sargent a genius? No.

I (or any of you) can easily produce that site using AI.

And his tactics for getting the site ranked on Google were considered amateurish by SEO experts even 10 years ago.

However, notice that he has a long history of work with Democratic government agencies and NGOs. The way that Google measures “authority”, his ties are considered the very top.

3) Sargent “seeded” it by getting backlinks from cheap backlink providers.

This is a tactic that used to work for all SEO practitioners years ago before Google clamped down on it. However, for reasons I’ll go through in the next point, it was highly effective for Sargent.

4) Remember when I mentioned that the RNC site had 10,000 backlinks? This site had 62.

That number is going to skyrocket now that this domain is in the news. But for all the time it was ranking #1, it was doing so despite having 99.38% fewer backlinks than the official RNC site.

5) BTW, if anyone is interested in which “big sites” lent their link support to prop up this domain, here’s a partial list.

I don’t see immediate indication that any of these were “in on it”, although each one is a “suspect”.

The more likely explanation, especially with sites like The Dallas Morning News and The Daily Wire started linking to it, simply because an editor didn’t bother to vet whether the site was legit, they just trusted Google.

6) But here’s the main question: How did a fraudulent site that someone threw up overnight suddenly rank #1 for this phrase, if not with backlinks?

The answer is simple. Since 2017 Google introduced an internal flag in their algorithm called “IsElectionAuthority”, where they will artificially promote sites they deem as “authoritative” and demote sites that are not. You can read more here.

If this thing blows up, Google’s PR is going to scramble and come up with an explanation with some BS like “sometimes our algorithm gets things wrong”. Don’t believe it. Clearly, an employee of Google decided to promote this site as an authority and to demote the GOP’s site.

This is election interference. Despite the tiny “disclaimer” on their site, the fact that they were collecting email addresses, misrepresenting themselves as an authoritative source of information, and misleading the public was fraud. Anyone who submitted an email address using that link has a very real legal case, as does the FTC, if they even choose to pursue it.

7) Here’s the real punchline.

@TheJusticeDept (under Merrick Garland, no less) found Google guilty of being an “abusive monopoly”. In September 2025, Judge Amit Mehta let Google walk free with little more than a slap on the wrist. The DOJ under Pam Bondi was weak in putting up an argument. This is prime facie evidence of the harm that Google’s search monopoly can do. Democrats are laughing it off as a prank, but what would they do if the shoe was on the other foot?

We know the answer. @douglassmackey was sentenced to jail for doing far less.

At the very least, we need the Federal government to investigate why a fake Web site for a critical political event was allowed for months to rank #1 on Google while its authentic counterpart was hidden from searchers. We need to know which groups and individuals in Google are responsible for administering the opaque “IsElectionAuthority” signal. And we need proper remedies to counter Google’s abusive monopoly that are made by politicians and judges who Alphabet’s lobbyists aren’t paying off. And we need it now.
